Three burned in accident at MidAmerican Energy
Three men were burned in an accident Saturday at the MidAmerican Energy Co. power plant, 7215 Navajo St.

Mark Reinders, communications coordinator for MidAmerican, said three contractors came into contact with calcium hydroxide shortly before noon Saturday.

Reinders said it was still unclear exactly how the men were exposed to the chemical, but he said there was no explosion.

Because the men were not employees of the company, Reinders could not identify them.

One man, 44, suffered serious burns to the back, arms, hands and neck area and was flown to Nebraska Medical Center, said Assistant Chief Larry Wohlers of the Council Bluffs Fire Department.

The other two were less seriously injured, Wohlers said. A 50-year-old man sustained burns to his neck and arms and was taken by ambulance to Nebraska Medical Center. A 31-year-old man received burns on his ankles and was taken to Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

"We will certainly cooperate with any investigation, and conduct our own," Reinders said.

The men were working on the new Council Bluffs Energy Center Unit 4. The new unit is scheduled to go online in June.

OMOV DEMOCRACY IN THE IBEW!

"Union Burying Ground"

Woody Guthrie (1946)

I see they're lowering right new coffin,
I see they're letting down right new coffin,
Way over in that Union Burying Ground.
And the new dirt's falling on a right new coffin,
The new dirt's falling on a right new coffin,
Way over in that Union Burying Ground.
O, tell me who's that they're letting down, down,
Tell me who's that they're letting down, down,
Way over in that Union Burying Ground.
Another union organizer,
Another union organizer,
Way over in that Union Burying Ground.
A union brother and a union sister,
A union brother and a union sister,
Way over in that Union Burying Ground.
A union father and a union mother,
And union father and a union mother,
Way over in that Union Burying Ground.
Well, I'm going to sleep in a union coffin,
I'm going to sleep in a union coffin,
Way over in that Union Burying Ground.
Every new grave brings a thousand new ones,
Every new grave brings a thousand members,
Way over in that Union Burying Ground.
Every new grave brings a thousand brothers,
And every new grave brings a thousand sisters,
To the union in that Union Burying Ground.
